Short Biography

Socratis Stratis has a doctorate degree in Urbanism / Architecture from the University of Paris Saint Denis, Paris, France. He has also obtained a graduate degree in Urbanism in the University of Paris 12 in 1998. He did his undergraduate and graduate studies in Architecture at the University of Cornell in the United States of America between 1984 and 1990, with a Fulbright scholarship. He is a registered architect in Cyprus and registered planner in France and Cyprus.

He has been awarded with several prizes for high scholastic achievement. Some of them are: Clifftors Beckwith Brown Memorial', 'Student Medal of the American Institute of Architects', 'New York of Architects Certificate'.

He is a lecturer in the School of Architecture at the University of Cyprus. He collaborates with 'AA + U' - Partnership for Architecture Art and Urbanism dealing a lot with issues about research and practice in architecture and urbanism.

He participated in Architectural competitions (International, Greek, Cypriot), through various collaborations. In some of which he was awarded with prizes: third prize in an international competition for the new campus of the University of Cyprus (1992), first prize in a European competition for a site in Heraklion Crete (Europan 4- 1996), first prize in a Greek competition for the construction of a memorial and a museum in Chania, Crete (1991), second prize in a competition in Cyprus for the redevelopment of the old port of Limassol (2004). In 2005, he has won a second prize in a european architectural competition for the redevelopment of the Eleftheria square in Nicosia.

Through his career as a practician he has participated in the design and implementation of architectural projects such as residents, parks and urban spaces.He is actually working on the implementation of the winning project in Europan 4 , in Heraklion, Crete, Greece.

He is the general secretary of Europan Cyprus and he collaborated with Europan Europe on the analysis of European results in Europan 7-8.

Research Interests

The research interests of Socrates Stratis are concentrated on the horizontal approach between architecture and urbanism, and - even more so - between research and practice. His practicing career and his academic position enhance even more such an approach. His doctorate degree dealed basicaly with the relations between analysis and design in a project based logic in a scale between architecture and urbanism.

The projects he undertakes in practice and research concentrate precisely on this horizontal approach, and contributes in this way to the creation of links among areas which usually function in isolation. In this way, architecture is approached within a broader framework than that simply of the building as such, thus placing emphasis on hybrid structures of practice and research following a project based logic.

Emphasizing such hybrid structures through his practice and research, he makes it possible firstly to incorporate social concerns and interests in the sphere of architectural creativity. Secondly, there is an emphasis for architects to seek a new role within a broader system of institutions dealing with architecture and the city.

He is participating in fact in various research groups of such logic. He exhibited, part of his research in the 9th Biennale of Architecture in 2004 and in various publications and presentations.
