MULTIOPTI Research Program

Multicasting and groupcasting with physical layer constraints in metropolitan optical networks with mesh topologies

General Project Objectives

The general objectives of the project are as follows:

(1) In accordance with the objectives of the program and the specific action (PENEK), it will support a young researcher (Ph.D. candidate) in order to perform cutting edge research for an area of high technological importance. Upon completion of his studies the young researcher will posses the skills that will make him capable of competing at the national as well as the international research arena.

(2) The student will obtain expertise that will be of great importance to the Cyprus economy, as he will be trained on a key priority area for the economic development of Cyprus, namely the area of Telecommunications Systems and Information Technology.

(3) The results of this project will be utilized by Cypriot telecommunications companies or Cypriot service providers to better design their metropolitan optical networks for high data-rate applications. This will result in improved client services and reduced operation costs for the telecommunications networks, which in turn will result in cheaper services for the clients of these networks.

(4) The final software product developed in this project will be licensed to interested parties for utilization as a research tool or as a design tool for real-life network deployments. In this way, the profile of the Cyprus researchers will be greatly enhanced, and Cyprus can become part of the growing number of countries that develop high-tech software solutions.
