About Us

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) of the University of Cyprus (UCY) offers graduate degree programs in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Construction and Transport Infrastructure Management (CTIM), at both the Master's (M.Eng., M.Sc.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) levels.

The CTIM graduate program covers the most current theories and practices needed by the construction & transport engineering and management professional. It is taught by faculty and industry professionals who hold particular prominence in their respective fields, and is complemented by knowledge infusions from visiting scholars. CTIM programs utilize case-based learning and are ideal for engineers, construction and transportation professionals.

Further to the postgraduate academic programs, the CTIM group is actively involved in theoretical and applied research pertaining to construction and transportation engineering and management. Said research work is performed at CTIM's two operated laboratories, the EUPALINOS - Construction Engineering and Water Distribution Networks Management Laboratory and the Lab for Transport Engineering (LTE), directed by Dr. Symeon Christodoulou and Dr. Loukas Dimitriou, respectively.

The University of Cyprus's CTIM group is co-managed by Dr. Symeon Christodoulou and Dr. Loukas Dimitriou, proud owners of the " EUPALINOS - Construction Engineering & Water Distribution Networks Management Laboratory" and of the " Lab for Transport Engineering (LTE)".

Dr. Symeon Christodoulou
, Head of the construction management group, and Dr. Loukas Dimitriou, Head of the transportation engineering group, are prominent researchers and academics in their respective fields, recipients of several academic and research awards, national representatives to international committees, authors of numerous publications and reviewers for over 100 scientific journals and technical conference committees.

Dr. S. Christodoulou has been elected as the Chairman of the European Council on Computing in Construction (EC3), for the period 2019-2021. EC3 is a society of construction professionals, academics, researchers and national Professional Bodies, aspiring to become the leading European forum in the area of information technology in construction engineering and management. EC3's mission is to advance professional knowledge and to improve engineering practice in the built environment by fostering research, education and policy in current and emerging computing and information technologies.

CTIM's "RONDA" Research Proposal Is Funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation

CTIM proudly announces the receipt of 1.0 mEUR funding from the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation for the creation of an integrated plarform for low-cost roadway pavement assessment (using smartphones and participatory sensing) and adaptive-location traffic assessment using unmanned aerial vehicles. Further to CTIM, project partners are the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works (Public Workds Department), the KIOS Center of Excellence, the Municipality of Lakatamia, Signalgenerix Ltd. and Geoimaging Ltd.

CTIM's "TrACE" Teaming Research Proposal is awarded a 'CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE' by the European Commission

CTIM 15.06.2019 Construction/Transport

The "TrACE" H2020/Teaming proposal, in which CTIM was a consortium partner, was ranked 15th (of about 150 proposals) and was put on reserve list (14 proposals were funded) and granted a "Certificate of Excellence" by the European Commission for its innovation, excellence and scientific impact. The proposal, for the creation of a Center of Excellence in Transport Analytics had a budget of about 70.0 mEUR (over 10 years) and significant endorsement from local Agencies, research institutions and the private sector, as well as from European and Middle Eastern partners.

CTIM's "STEP2SMART" Project is featured on local TV

The "Step2Smart" Hellas-Cyprus Interreg Action was featured on local TV, with key interviews by Dr. Dimitriou and Dr. Christodoulou. "Step2Smart"< aims the optimization of traffic signals in a case-study traffic artery and the development of a platform for traffic analytics for use by traffic agencies and citizens.

CTIM's Dr. G. Hadjidemetriou is awarded a post-doctoral research fellowship by the University of Cambridge, UK

CTIM is proud to announce that Dr. G. Hadjidemetriou has been granted a competitive post-doctoral scholarship by the University of Cambridge (UK) for work on infrastructure assessment and risk analysis. Dr. Hadjidemetriou, a CTIM doctoral student and research associate until Jan. 2019, had over his tenure at CTIM been awarded several scholarships and had worked on numerous research projects on roadway pavement assesment, BIM, machine vision and artificial intelligence.

CTIM proudly announces the graduation of two of his doctoral candidates, Dr. Charalambos Kyriakou and Dr. Georgios Hadjidemetriou who worked on low-cost roadway pavement assessment using smartphone-based sensors, machine vision, timeseries analysis and artificial intelligence. Both Charalambos and Georgios will continue on their academic and research paths as post-doctoral research associates at the University f Cyprus and the University of Cambridge, respectively. Mr. C. Kyriakou's paper on roadway pavement anomaly detection and classification is awarded as 'best student paper' at the WCPAM2017 conference

Mr. C. Kyriakou's WCPAM2017 conference paper "Roadway Pavement Anomaly Detection and Classification by use of Smartphones and Artificial Intelligence" has received a 'best student paper award' at the World Conference on Pavement and Asset Management [WCPAM2017] (Baveno, Italy, Jun. 12-16, 2017) and, through it, acceptance of his work for presentation at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 2018 Conference in Washington DC. The paper discusses the latest developments in Mr. Kyriakou's research work on low-cost smartphone-based detection and classification of roadway pavement anomalies by use of participatory sensing and artificial intelligence.

CTIM researchers awarded doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships

Successful test-pilot implementation of developed PRODROMOS platforms

CTIM 29.09.2015 Construction/Transport

CTIM's PRODROMOS team successfully completes the final-stage pilot implementation of the developed hardware/software platforms on the safe maritime transport of dangerous cargo. The platforms were demonstrated in the presence of officials from the Cypriot and Greek Ministries of Transport, the Cyprus Ports Authority, the Police Department, the Fire Department, First Responders, and several other stakeholders. Next pilot implementations are scheduled for November in Heraklion (Crete) and Athens, Greece.

CTIM wishes Mr. Andreas Chari, a Nireas-IWRC researcher, the best at the Regional Competition for the Institution of Engineering and Technology's Young Professionals Global Challenge competition (Dubai, July 2015). Andreas was the winner of Cyprus's national competition earlier this year. The Global Challenge aims to encourage Young Professionals across the globe to address a real world engineering challenge with their diverse academic and technical exposure.

LTE hosts the 2015 "MULTITUDE Summer School"

CTIM 10.06.2015 Transport

CTIMS's Lab for Transport Engineering hosts the 2015 MULTITUDE Summer School (4th in the MULTITUDE series) on advanced traffic simulation. This intensive three-day school provides attendants with training on advanced traffic simulation methods and models, their systematic calibration and validation, the reliability of predictions made by traffic simulation models, and tools and frameworks for the management of uncertainty. Several case studies will be presented and a team-based, hands-on, practicum will guide attendants through the application of the whole process of uncertainty management in traffic simulation. The school is targeted at graduate and PhD students, engineers, researchers, consultants and government employees who wish to improve their understanding and skills in the application of traffic simulation to real world scenarios.

2015 Transport and Logistics Excellence Award.

CTIM's PRODROMOS project is awarded the Hellenic 2015 Transport and Logistics Excellence Award for its innovation in maritime transport. The PRODROMOS project is a research collaboration between Nireas-IWRC, Cyprus's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works - Dept. of Public Works, Cyprus's Port Authority, Greece's Ministry of Transport, the Heraklion Port Organisation, and the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas, aiming for the development of processes, technology and tools for the safe maritime transport of dangerous cargo. The award ceremony was attended by about 350 senior executives from the largest companies in Greece, and awarded projects which were distinguished by a competent jury from the industry and academia.

Our research focuses on issues of national and international interest, of either applied or scientific nature, all intertwined in a self-feeding research and academic loop. National research agendas are linked to related international efforts, international knowledge is transfused into national research, scientific research is put to practice, and all earned knowledge is then transformed into instructional material. CTIM Academic Programs & Courses

CTIM programs teach professionals the broad array of technical and non-technical activities associated with construction and transport infrastructure management, and consist of courses from the following four categories: (A) core courses; (B) technical electives; (C) CEE-offered courses; (D) UCY-offered courses. Students are required to take a specified number of courses from each category, as summarized in Tables above and described in detail in the course syllabi listed below.
