Multibroad Research Program

Novel Design and Simulation Software Tool for Provisioning and Restoration ofBroadcast and Multicast Connections in Optical Mesh Networks

Research Goals

The general research goals of the project are as follows:

(1) The project aims at the creation of internationally acclaimed novel knowledge and tools in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), i.e., the design of core mesh optical networks to efficiently support survivable broadcast and multicast applications. The project will join the initiatives to design next-generation core networks and will promote Cyprus as a center of Research, Technology, Development and Innovation (RTDI) in cutting-edge ICT fields.

(2) This project includes designing the core network architecture (transport and control layers) with the necessary routing and restoration algorithms and protocols that will provide increased service availability to the end-users for high data-rate multicast/broadcast applications. The project results will be exploited by telecommunications companies, providing them with improved client services and reduced operation costs for the backbone networks, which in turn will result in cheaper services for the clients of these networks.

(3) The final software product developed in this project will be licensed to interested parties for utilization as a research tool or as a design tool for real-life network deployments. In this way, the profile of the Cyprus researchers will be greatly enhanced, and Cyprus can become part of the growing number of countries that develop high-tech software solutions.

(4) Young researchers will be trained in the field of Optical Communications and Information Technology.
