Research Goals

The general research goals of the project are as follows:

(1) The project aims for the creation of internationally acclaimed novel knowledge in an emerging field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), i.e. design of broadband access networks. The project will join the initiatives to design next-generation broadband access networks and will promote Cyprus as a centre of Research, Technology, Development and Innovation (RTDI) in cutting-edge ICT fields.

(2) This project that includes designing the access network architecture with the necessary algorithms and protocols will provide mobile and stationary end-users with access to enormous bandwidth. This will be achieved through a converged optical-wireless access solution in an affordable, simple and future-proof way thus improving the quality of Communications Infrastructure.

(3) Through the Individual Researcher and PA2, start a close and meaningful collaboration between Local and International research, academic, and business organizations in the field of Optical Communications and Networking.

(4) Train young researchers on a key priority area for the economic development of Cyprus, namely the area of Telecommunications Systems and Information Technology.

(5) Create an Optical Communications and Networking lab which will specialize in evaluating novel optical network architectures and protocols and provide benchmarks for future research.
