Consortium
Partners The consortium comprises of the University of Cyprus (Host Organization),
the Cyprus
Academic Research Institute (CARI) (Partner 1), the University of Patras
(Partner 2), and PrimeTel Plc
(Partner 3). University of Cyprus (HO): The University of Cyprus (UCY), located in Nicosia, Cyprus,
is the leading research University in Cyprus that aspires to promote
scholarship and education standards of excellence through teaching and
research. The University of Cyprus and its Office of Sponsored Research have
previous experience in managing projects funded by the Cyprus Research
Promotion Foundation and the European Commission. UCY has received successful
competitive research funding that has exceeded the 15 million Euro mark over
the 1996-2007 period.
Recently, the UCY has revised its research policy in order to increase the
efficiency of the University to utilize research funding and opportunities
and to better promote research initiatives in Cyprus. Specifically, the host
Electrical and Computer Eng. (ECE) department has, in 2003-2007, received
several million Euro
in research funding and its faculty has published around 90 journal papers,
180 conference papers and 20 patents. Cyprus Academic Research Institute (PA1): The faculty members supporting the School of Sciences
at the University of Nicosia are experienced and highly qualified academics.
Many of them have industry-related background and/or have worked abroad in
other universities. Most of the faculty are also actively engaged in research
and have published and continue to publish papers in international scientific
journals and conference proceedings. Specifically, the University of Nicosia,
through its various representatives, either faculty or staff, is currently
involved in local (public and private), EC, national, or international grant
programs worth over 10 million Euro. Moreover, they maintain research
collaborations and/or links with other universities and institutions in
Cyprus and abroad. Research work is carried out in the areas of Optical Networks,
Fiber Optics, Wireless Communications and Networks, Signal Processing, and
Image Processing, amongst others. The Cyprus Academic Research Institute located at the
University of Nicosia has extensive simulation facilities that will
also be used in the proposed project. The University of Patras (PA2) is the third largest University in Greece with more
than 40,000 students and 850 faculty members. It is strongly committed to
fundamental and applied research and it has been heavily involved in European
and Greek research programs since its foundation. It participates in major
European research programs (ESPRIT, EURECA, etc.). In recent years, over 2700
research projects have been carried out. The Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering is a distinguished and well-known education and research
center for Electrical Engineering studies. It has approximately 2100
undergraduate and 220 graduate students and approximately 50 faculty members.
The Optical Communications Group is the newest addition to the Laboratory of
Elecromagnetics, Telecommunications and Information Technology Division. It
focuses on the theoretical study of ultra high data rate point-to-point
optical communications systems, advanced optical network architectures and
related emerging technologies. Other laboratories in the areas of optics and
optical communications are: a) Laser Laboratory (Physics Department) focused
on photonic materials, nonlinear optics, ultrafast phenomena and fiber
optics, and b) Communication Networks Laboratory (Computer Science
department) with focus on next generation optical network switches for both
circuit- and packet-switched optical networks. PrimeTel Plc (PA3) is a Telecom and IT company based in Cyprus. It owns and operates a truly regional network,
