RoFLab Research Program

Next Generation Hybrid Optical-Wireless Communications Laboratory

Research Goals

The general objectives are to take existing infrastructure in the wireless and optical communications research laboratories of the University of Cyprus and to simultaneously upgrade both within the framework of a single project. In particular, we aim to acquire state-of-the-art equipment which will allow us to create modern communication test-beds that are not possible with the existing infrastructure. The development of novel networks combining optical and wireless interfaces in a seamless and scalable fashion will allow Cyprus to (i) participate as an effective partner in future European projects in Information and Communications Technology (one of the key areas of FP7) and (ii) support the development of local communications industry, by allowing them to test different hybrid fiber/wireless networks. Specifically, the existence of a local facility will enable companies and academic institutions to evaluate new and emerging component technologies in a realistic environment, thus leading to better informed choices of future network configurations. We also expect that the test-bed will support a large number of interdisciplinary projects between the partners that involve optoelectronics, microwave engineering, network engineering, communication system modelling and communication system testing.
