RoFLab Research Program

Next Generation Hybrid Optical-Wireless Communications Laboratory

Project Partners

The consortium for this proposed project includes the University of Cyprus (Host Organization), the (University of Nicosia Research Foundation (Partner 1 Organization)) and PrimeTel (Partner 2 Organization).

University of Cyprus: The University of Cyprus (UCY), located in Nicosia, Cyprus, is the leading research University in Cyprus and it aspires to promote scholarship and education standards of excellence through teaching and research. The University of Cyprus and its Office of Sponsored Research have previous experience in managing projects funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and the European Commission. UCY has received successful competitive research funding that has exceeded the 15 million Euro mark over the 1996-2007 period. Recently, UCY has revised its research policy in order to increase the efficiency of the University to utilize research funding and opportunities and to better promote research initiatives in Cyprus. The new research policy adopts the declarations of the European Commission (EC) for balancing basic and applied research, and provides the necessary administrative support to the academic and research staff of the University in order to more effectively secure external research funding. Specifically, the host Electrical and Computer Eng. (ECE) department has, in 2003-2007, received several million Euros in research funding and its faculty has published around 90 journal papers, 180 conference papers and 20 patents. The available wireless and fiber-optic telecommunications and photonics  laboratory facilities in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in combination with the unique expertise and competence of the project coordinator, particularly qualify UCY for hosting the team leader and the team, and conducting research in the area of wireless and optical networking. In addition, the recently formed KIOS Research Center for Intelligent Systems and Networks will be a source of future research workers that can use the new infrastructure. KIOS brings together in an inspiring environment a critical mass of internationally known researchers with significant experience in leading large research projects. The KIOS Center instigates interdisciplinary interaction and promotes collaboration between industry, academia and research organization in high tech areas of importance to Cyprus.

Cyprus Academic Research Institute (CARI): The faculty members supporting the School of Sciences at the University of Nicosia are experienced and highly qualified academics. Many of them have industry-related background and/or have worked abroad in other universities. Most of the faculty are also actively engaged in research and have published and continue to publish papers in international scientific journals and conference proceedings. Specifically, the University of Nicosia, through its various representatives, either faculty or staff, is currently involved in local (public and private), EC, national, or international grant programs worth over 10 million Euro. Moreover, they maintain research collaborations and/or links with other universities and institutions in Cyprus and abroad. Research work is carried out in the areas of Optical Networks, Fiber Optics, Wireless Communications and Networks, Signal Processing, and Image Processing, amongst others. The University of Nicosia has extensive simulation facilities that will also be used in the proposed project.

PrimeTel: PrimeTel PLC is a telecommunication and information technology company, incorporated in Cyprus.  PrimeTel owns and operates a truly regional network, spanning across Greece, Cyprus, Russia and the United Kingdom, providing city-to-city connectivity, data communications and IP-based services between key European and Middle East markets. PrimeTel is one of the few telecommunications operators in the region that can provide a full spectrum of connectivity and services. Through its strategic partnership with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) in the field of Telecommunications, PrimeTel owns and operates a nationwide fiber optic network.  This fiber network platform allows PrimeTel to offer unlimited broadband capabilities and services to users across the country thus covering all sectors of the business, residential, corporate and carrier. PrimeTel offers Internet, Data and Video services to corporate customers for their communication needs, to individuals for their entertainment and communication needs and to other telecommunication carriers for their network needs.   Several of these services and applications will be tested in the proposed test-bed architecture. PrimeTel has a highly qualified management team and staff that consist of seasoned professionals with extensive telecom experience in Europe. PrimeTel also has extensive laboratory facilities and equipment that will be leveraged for the successful completion of the project.
