CEE 491 - Capstone Design II
(Level: Undergraduate)
Course Outline
The course is the second part of a capstone design course experience in civil and environmental engineering, required of all students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Cyprus.
The course takes students through a start-to-end inception, design, planning and construction process for a major (locally) civil engineering project, utilizing their previously acquired collective knowledge in the field of civil and environmental engineering. Sample projects which the students are asked to study, design and "implement" range in nature, from a university campus, to a stadium, a hospital, a solid-waste management facility, a financial buidling, a marina, etc.
The course, which is traditionally taught by 3-4 instructors of varying professional expertise, covers the following topics:
- Site selection,
- Environmental impact assessment,
- Structural design,
- Seismic analysis,
- Development of construction specifications,
- Cost estimating,
- Construction scheduling,
- 3D/4D modeling
Course Delivery Tools
The aforementioned topics are taught on the basis of a specific construction project (term project) and with the help of specialized design and construction-related software (MS-Excel, Revit, Fespa, Oracle Primavera P6, Navisworks).
